A positive umbilical venous-arterial difference of leptin level and its rapid decline after birth
Article Abstract:
Leptin appears to be produced by the placenta, indicating that it may play a role in fetal development. Leptin was originally found in fat tissue and is known to be involved in appetite and fat metabolism. Researchers measured leptin levels in maternal blood, umbilical cord blood, and the umbilical artery and vein in 38 pregnant women and their newborn infants. Leptin levels were significantly higher in the umbilical vein than in the umbilical artery. Leptin levels declined after birth. This indicates that leptin is produced by the placenta.

Angiopoietin-related growth factor antagonizes obesity and insulin resistance
Article Abstract:
Angiopoietin-related growth factor (AGF) is identified as a member of the angiopoietin-like protein (Angptl) family, which is found help in angiogenesis and proliferation of skin cells, and thereby promoting wound healing. AGF is a potential target for developing attractive pharmacological interventions counteracting obesity and related metabolic diseases.

Overexpression of CNP in chondrocytes rescues achondroplasia through a MAPK-dependent pathway
Article Abstract:
Achondroplasia is the most common genetic form of human dwarfism for which there is presently no effective therapy. These results demonstrates that activation of the CNP-GC-B system in endochondral bone formation constitutes a new therapeutic strategy for human achondroplasia.
