Knitting up the raveled sleave of care: role of sleep and effects of its lack examined
Article Abstract:
The American Sleep Disorders Association and Sleep Research Society reports on recent research. Studies show that most adults would sleep longer and would sleep several times a day if free to do so. Sleep deprivation most strongly affects the areas of the brain responsible for attention, alertness, short-term memory, calculation, sensory processing, and reasoning and problem solving. Nonrapid eye movement sleep appears to selectively help the brain centers associated with complex mental operations recuperate. Adjusting resident physicians on-call schedule to allow for more sleep might improve performance.
