A professional organization makes a difference in Lithuania
Article Abstract:
Lithuania is facing economic and social changes. Despite increasing numbers of sexually transmitted diseases maternal mortality rates are on the decline. Rules regarding childbirth have been relaxed since 1994 when the Lithuanian Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology decided to try to improve the conditions in the country. The associations work and teachings may be responsible for the improvement.

Saving lives after civil war
Article Abstract:
The civil war in Angola lasted from 1975 to 1996. The country is very poor as a result of the conflict and maternal health services are limited. However, at the Lucrecia Paim Hospital efforts have been made to reduce maternal mortality from eclampsia. Magnesium sulfate is used to reduce the numbers of deaths. Efforts to combat postpartum hemorrhage are ongoing.
