Occupational exposure to environmental tobacco smoke
Article Abstract:
Environmental tobacco smoke may pose considerable risk to nonsmokers in the workplace. Researchers used monitors to continuously measure nicotine concentrations in the air in production areas and offices of industrial manufacturers and other businesses over a week period. A total of 467 samples were collected in the work areas, break rooms, and cafeterias of nonsmokers at 25 Massachusetts workplaces. The samples were taken in open offices, shop areas, and closed offices. At worksites where smoking was allowed, nicotine concentrations were much higher than at workplaces where no-smoking policies were in effect. More than half of 61 samples collected at desks of nonsmokers exceeded a significant risk level, and 12% of 114 samples taken in shop areas of nonsmokers also exceeded this level. Smoking bans appear to reduce exposure of airborne nicotine, making the workplace healthier for nonsmokers.

Tobacco tax initiative - Oregon, 1996
Article Abstract:
Data from Oregon indicate that people will be more likely to vote for an increase in tobacco taxes if the revenues are spent on tobacco prevention and other health programs. In Nov, 1995, Oregon voters approved an initiative that would raise tobacco taxes and use 10% of the money on a statewide tobacco prevention program and 90% to expand health care coverage for medically underinsured people. A pre-election telephone poll of 813 households showed that 67% to 89% favored the initiative if the money were used for these purposes. Only 20% favored the initiative if the money would be added to the state's general fund.
