A scouting legacy and a chiropractor's heritage
Article Abstract:
The Boy Scouts organization had its beginnings in Mafeking, South Africa at the end of the 19th century, during the Boer War, a clash between the English and the Dutch for political control over South Africa. A British General named Baden Powell was in dire need of support because he was greatly outnumbered, so he enlisted three adolescent boys to help him run messages. Eventually the ranks of 'Boy Cadets' grew to 40, and they performed dozens of tasks, including serving as rooftop lookouts and hospital orderlies. When the war was over, these boys stuck together and frequently went camping as a group. They called themselves the 'Scouts', which inspired Baden Powell to create the international Boy Scouts organization that exists today. Trevor Ireland, a chiropractor whose grandfather was one of those three original boy scouts in South Africa, became disturbed when he found out that the Boy Scouts organization did not officially recognize physical examinations done by chiropractors. Inspired by his grandfather, Trevor became an outstanding scout himself, receiving the highest award possible of 'Queen Scout' by the Queen of England. Dr. Ireland, together with a coalition of chiropractors led by Dr. Ronald Woods, convinced the scouting leadership that chiropractic was a viable health-care alternative and that chiropractors were quite qualified to perform physical exams. The Boy Scouts organization, which has a long history of progressive change and is often in the foreground in working on current important issues, agreed with the chiropractic coalition to change their prior policy.
