Nutrition and diabetes
Article Abstract:
Nutritional management can play a vital role in treating all types of diabetes. It can assist in reducing the incidence of macrovascular disease, especially cardiovascular disease, and can optimize nutritional status. It can also cut the incidence of hyper- and hypoglycaemia and optimize glycaemic control. Calorie control and resulting weight reduction can reduce insulin resistance, while eating regularly can prevent sudden large rises in blood glucose levels. Diabetics should also be advised to reduce the amount of sodium in their diet, as sodium has hypertensive effects.
