A sensitive zonagenetic assay for rapid in vitro assessment of estrogenic potency of xenobiotics and mycotoxins

Article Abstract:

Zona radiata (zr) proteins and vitellogenin are brought on in primary hepatocytes from Atlantic salmon exposed to xenoestrogens and mycotoxins. Hepatic biosynthetic processes are necessary for female sexual maturation in fish. Estrogen controls the maturation, and the oogentic events are brought on in both sexes by estrogens. Biosynthesis of zr proteins offers a method for estimating xenoestrogenicity and mycotoxin action.

Researchers studied the effects of the compound 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) in insecticide Matacil 1.8D on Atlantic salmon populations. A causal relationship was discovered between use of the 4-NP-formulated insecticide and increased salmon smolt mortality rates and low salmon catches along exposed rivers.
