A time to live or a time to die?
Article Abstract:
Voluntary euthanasia poses ethical problems for the medical profession. A request for an end to suffering conflicts with their aim to save life. However, terminally-ill patients have the right to control their deaths and a living will may be a means of communicating their wishes. However, it may be difficult to ascertain whether a request for euthanasia is genuine. Problems may also occur if patients change their minds. Optimum care and counselling should be available to ensure good quality of life for the terminally-ill and only the patient should have the right to decide.

An act of love...
Article Abstract:
Nurses should support the legalisation of voluntary euthanasia. Public opinion largely supports a persons right to die with dignity and nurses should reflect those attitudes. It is inconsistent for the law to allow withholding of treatment yet forbid active intervention as the intent is the same. Compassion motivates euthanasia and nurses should be concerned with their patients' quality of life. Terminally ill patients may rely on the nurse to be their representative.

Is Britain ready for voluntary euthanasia?
Article Abstract:
Opposing views are presented on whether voluntary euthanasia should be introduced in the UK. Some observers feel that, as 82% of the public support making voluntary euthanasia a legal option, the medical profession must consider how to respect patients' independence while continuing to improve standards of terminal care. Others feel that voluntary euthanasia remove the incentive to ensure that patients have access to palliative care.
