A trial of three regimens to prevent tuberculosis in Ugandan adults infected with the human immunodeficiency virus
Article Abstract:
Three to six months of antituberculosis therapy can reduce the risk of active tuberculosis in HIV-infected patients who have a positive tuberculin skin test. Researchers randomly assigned 2,736 HIV-infected Ugandans with a positive tuberculin skin test to take a placebo, isoniazid for six months, isoniazid and rifampin for three months or isoniazid, rifampin and pyrazinamide for three months. Compared to the placebo, all the drugs substantially lowered the risk of active tuberculosis. Pyrazinamide appeared to cause many of the recorded side effects. Survival rates were similar in all groups.

Transient intestinal carriage after ingestion of antibiotic-resistant Enterococcus faecium from chicken and pork
Article Abstract:
Researchers show that drug-resistant bacteria found in meat can remain in the human gastrointestinal tract and even multiply. The bacteria colonized the gastrointestinal tracts of 12 volunteers for up to two weeks and were detected in fecal material.

Effect of antibiotic therapy on the density of vancomycin-resistant enterococci in the stool of colonized patients
Article Abstract:
Some antibiotics seem to promote the growth and spread of bacteria that are resistant to vancomycin. Patients who are infected with vancomycin-resistant bacteria should not be treated with these antibiotics.
