A welcome move toward PRO reform
Article Abstract:
The Health Care Financing Administration has allowed input from several groups for the first time in formulating its Peer Review Organization (PRO) Fourth Scope of Work plan. The groups include the American Medical Association, the American Association of Retired Persons and the American Hospital Association. The plan will require reviewers to be licensed in the state where they review and to frequently treat Medicare patients themselves. PROs will be required to solicit and consider state medical association input before changing review rules, and any new criteria must be disclosed to physicians.

Seal of approval
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association's potentially controversial pilot project to establish a seal of approval for physicians could prove valuable in boosting healthcare credibility, particularly in the area of managed care. The standards will assure patients and employers that they will not lose quality when they enter managed care plans. They should also reduce duplication in health plan management, thereby boosting efficiency. The standards will benefit physicians by providing a fair forum for reviews.

Residents want quick action on urgent managed care issues
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association (AMA)'s Resident Physicians Section (RPS) urged the AMA to immediately develop measures addressing managed care rather than waiting for further study as the AMA has recommended. The RPS asked its leaders to develop education and financial guidelines that support the aims of both managed care and teaching institutions. One member said that RPS members urgently wanted foresight from the AMA to prevent corporate America from dictating training standards.
