Who should police drug ads?
Article Abstract:
A study of drug advertisement by the Annals of Internal Medicine found errors in 92% of the ads studied. The researchers, led by Michael S. Wilkes, found many minor errors but still would have prevented 28% of the ads from appearing. The reviewers want higher drug advertisement standards and better enforcement by the Food and Drug Administration because physicians may consult drug ads when they prescribe medication. Drug ad supporters feel, however, that current standards and enforcement are adequate.

Specialties form coalitions to survive in managed care
Article Abstract:
Some specialty-care physicians are banding together, formally and informally, to take out newspaper ads and lobby with legislators and medical associations to keep specialty medicine alive. One otolaryngologist has experienced a 30% decline in patients with the advent of managed care. The coalitions are not resting easy with the defeat of legislated health care reform because they believe that new restrictions on specialty care may be introduced in the federal and state congresses.

Accreditors put brakes on subspecialty 'proliferation.'
Article Abstract:
The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) has declared a moratorium on new medical subspecialties, which have proliferated in recent years. The number of subspecialties now accredited by ACGME is 50, and the American Board of Medical specialties recognizes 80 fields in addition to the major specialties. This emphasis on specialization detracts from training for primary care, especially in residency programs, according to many authorities.
