AMA board backs broader nonbias policy
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association Board of Trustees has voted to include gays in the group's anti-discrimination policy. The policy already specifies age, sex, color, religion, disability, ethnicity and national origin. However, the proposal may face opposition from AMA delegates, who say that the organization need not specify sexual orientation in its policy because its anti-discrimination policy tacitly covers homosexuals. Supporters of the proposal point to the important symbolism of the measure and to the health problems exacerbated by prejudice against gay people.

Organized medicine's open door
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association's (AMA) House of Delegates defeated a measure that would bar discrimination against homosexual physicians. Critics believe that the resolution was not needed and that adding non-discrimination language to the AMA bylaws would create a perception that discrimination was acceptable against all groups not specifically mentioned. However, some supporters of the resolution believe that the AMA has institutional homophobia. Others feel that the AMA is merely insensitive to issues facing gay and lesbian physicians.

Disabilities act will turn some physicians into plaintiffs
Article Abstract:
The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 will allow physicians to sue medical schools and hospitals if they are denied admission or employment because of a disability. It can also be used to challenge discrimination in hospital credentialing. The law's definition of a disability includes cancer, HIV infection, mental illness and past alcoholism or drug abuse. An estimated 20,000 to 60,000 US physicians could be classified as disabled.
