Shut schools or cut students? Pew Commission report revives debate on physician supply
Article Abstract:
The Pew Health Professions Commission recommends elimination of about 20% of national medical schools by 2005 to ameliorate physician oversupply situation and further reduce hospital closings. The Pew Commission also suggests visa restrictions on international medical graduates, limitation of residency slots to 110% of US graduates, and changes in primary care physicians' training programs so they can get about 25% of their training in community, ambulatory, and managed care environments.

AMA report questions predictions of physician glut
Article Abstract:
An oversupply of 165,000 physicians in the US by 2000 was predicted as a byproduct of health care reform by Jonathan P Weiner, in a 1994 article in the Journal of the American Medical Assn. Weiner's assumptions have been challenged by Phillip R. Kletke, in an article published by the AMA Physician Marketplace Report. Kletke claims medical schools are already graduating too many physicians, but he points to errors in Weiner's figures. Details of both projections are analyzed.

Will HMOs create physician glut?
Article Abstract:
The domination of the San Francisco Bay Area's health care market by health maintenance organizations (HMOs) could result in a physician glut. Experts expect layoffs in some specialty areas. Many physicians are joining independent practice associations or groups to win HMO contracts. As HMOs become increasingly competitive, they may also begin to layoff physicians who fail to meet certain performance standards.
