AMA joins to block release of 'Medicare millionaires.'(names of physicians with many Medicare patients)
Article Abstract:
The AMA is requesting to be named a co-defendant with the Health Care Financing Administration in a case in which Cox Newspapers seeks to disclose the names of 72 physicians in six states who make more than $1 million in Medicare payments. The government and the AMA are attempting to block the disclosure on the grounds that it is a violation of the privacy rights of the doctors. However, Rep. Thomas Bliley has requested the release of the names to Congress because he believes that such physicians have an increased number of patients receiving poor or unnecessary care.

N.Y. charge limits overturned; victory may be fleeting
Article Abstract:
A New York law limiting the fees physicians could charge Medicare patients above the amount Medicare pays has been overturned. The law limited doctors to charging no more that 115% of Medicare's 'reasonable charge.' However, since Medicare has dropped the 'reasonable charge' standard in favor of the resource-based relative value scale, the judge in the case ruled that the New York law no longer was applicable. The New York case contrasts with rulings in other states where laws limiting charges to Medicare patients have generally been upheld.
