God's messengers in the house of medicine
Article Abstract:
Physician-clerics blend scientific and medical knowledge with religious training at a time when medicine as a whole is increasingly examining its ethical and moral responsibilities. Although the number of physician-clerics is not known, one study indicates that there were approximately 200 physician-clerics nationwide in 1989. Physician-clerics say that there are no inherent contradictions between medicine and religion, but when values and duties conflict, they refer their patients to other physicians.

Local solutions: organized medicine has launched a network of free clinics to help the poor
Article Abstract:
Many physicians donate their time to free clinics that offer health care for the poor. In the 1970s and 1980s, over 130 free clinics were created, many by local medical societies, to serve a mix of urban and rural patients. Joliet, IL, has a free-clinic program that enlists the aid of 100 physicians and serves more than 2,500 patients per year. Congress is working on legislation that would support the services that free clinics provide.

Unprecedented exposure for a woman in medicine
Article Abstract:
Internist Joanna Demas, who posed nude for a Playboy magazine article on women health care professionals, believes the ensuing publicity does not detract from her credibility. The doctor frequently testifies before the Ohio legislature, and her colleagues describe her as a good physician. Even those medical authorities who disapprove of the Playboy spread prefer to soft pedal its importance.
