AMA to revise Sunbeam deal; leaders defend educational goal, but financial aspects draw criticism
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Assn (AMA) has had to revise its agreement with Sunbeam Corp. to place its seal of approval on a line of home health products manufactured by Sunbeam with AMA consumer education material inserts. The approval was to be supplied in exchange for royalties to finance the AMA's public health programs. Ethical consultants, consumer advocates, the media and physicians criticized this plan. The AMA wanted to provide health information to consumers, fund initiatives against family violence, for geriatric home care and HIV education and not to finance association operations.

Putting medicine on the highway with new wheels
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Assn (AMA) was created in 1901, but the needs of its members and the medical environment has drastically changed since then. In order to survive, the Federation must recreate itself and phase in these changes over a three-year period. Past AMA Pres Joseph T. Painter and over 200 other AMA members have formulated changes that are necessary, such as reconfiguring the delegate population and preserving member identities.
