Causal pathways for CCR5 genotype and HIV progression
Article Abstract:
Even people who have only one copy of the CCR5 mutation are somewhat protected from severe AIDS, according to data from the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study. CD4 T cell counts in people who had one copy of the mutation did not decrease as quickly and they did not develop AIDS as quickly as those who had a normal CCR5 gene.

Association of race and gender with HIV-1 RNA levels and immunologic progression
Article Abstract:
Women and ethnic minorities may have different responses to the AIDS virus, and doctors should take this into account when treating them. In a study of 1,256 female and 1,603 male HIV patients, women had more rapid decreases in CD4+ T cell counts than men and non-whites had slower decreases than whites.

Accelerated changes (inflection points) in levels of serum immune activation markers and CD4+ and CD8+ T cells prior to AIDS onset
Article Abstract:
HIV patients with accelerated declines in immune function during the course of their infection may have more abnormal immune status at the time that progression to AIDS is diagnosed. Researchers studied 158 HIV-positive people during 5.5 years of infection before AIDS diagnosis. Fifty-nine percent had abrupt declines in CD4+ T cell counts, and 49% had abrupt declines in CD8+ T cell counts. Serum neopterin and beta 2-microglobulin increased abruptly in 48% and 38% of patients, respectively. Such inflection points in immune function indicate important immune changes.
