Molecular and virologic characteristics of lymphoid malignancies in children with AIDS
Article Abstract:
Lymphoid cancer in HIV-infected children has different characteristics than in adult HIV patients. This was the conclusion of a study of 25 HIV-infected children with lymphomas or B-cell leukemia.

Risk factors for pediatric human immunodeficiency virus-related malignancy
Article Abstract:
More research is needed to identify the risk factors for cancer in HIV-infected children. In a study of 43 HIV-infected children with cancer and 74 HIV-infected children without cancer, only high levels of Epstein-Barr virus in blood seemed to be a risk factor for cancer. However, this was only true in children with CD4 T cell counts of 200 or more. Twenty-eight of the 43 children with cancer had non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Association of Epstein-Barr virus with leiomyosarcomas in young people with AIDS
Article Abstract:
The development of smooth-muscle tumors (leiomyomas and leiomyosarcomas) in children with AIDS, may be caused by infection with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Smooth-muscle tumors are very rare in children whose immune systems are functioning well. Nor are smooth-muscle tumors seen often in adults with AIDS. A study of tissue specimens of five leiomyosarcomas and two leiomyomas from five children and one young man with AIDS revealed very high levels of EBV in all tissue samples. EBV was not seen in smooth-muscle tumors from HIV-negative patients. The findings suggest that EBV causes smooth-muscle tumors in AIDS patients, and may also cause such tumors in other immunocompromised patients. EBV infection may be thought to precede the change from benign cells to malignant cells. Weakening of the immune system by AIDS may increase production of the EBV receptor CD21 on tumor cells; EBV infection may also increase the expression of its receptor.
