Accidents at work: the Scottish anomaly
Article Abstract:
The number of workplace fatalities and serious accidents is much higher in Scotland than in the rest of the UK. In 1998, there were 36 reported fatalities in Scottish workplaces, along with more than 2,000 serious injuries. The Scottish share of fatalities and serious injuries in the UK has risen significantly during the 1990s. It is possible that employers in Scotland are more able to avoid complying with safety regulations than their counterparts elsewhere in the UK. Furthermore, Scotland has a poor record of taking action against employers who violate safety regulations.
