Accreditation surveys: coping with the worst-case scenario
Article Abstract:
The nurse administrator of a 49-bed hospital was able to accept the impact of 5 accreditation surveys in 3 months by keeping the facility's goals simple, trusting staff leaders, and keeping a positive attitude. By involving the entire staff, treating surveyors respectfully, and rehearsing survey procedures and probable responses, the hospital removed all its deficiencies to be recertified by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and by Medicare.

A professional practice model: two key components
Article Abstract:
Professional practice models (PPMs) for nurses must include measurements of salaried compensation and the ability of unit members to self-schedule. Salary often determines status in a professional environment. Scheduling that preserves staff autonomy and flexibility improves attendance and the quality of work. One year after this PPM was instituted, staff turnover rate dropped to 0%, as compared to 23.6% two years before the model began.

Meeting the Challenge of Unscheduled Outpatient Visits
Article Abstract:
The H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Tampa, FL, developed a Symptom Evaluation Area (SEA) for unscheduled visits by cancer patients. The SEA reduced costs because prior to establishing the new program, cancer patients would receive treatment in the emergency room. Patient needs varied, but most reported to the SEA due to nausea, fever, or pain.
