Achievement of dietary goals - Kansas, 1993
Article Abstract:
A nutrition survey conducted by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment found that the nutritional habits of most respondents did not meet the goals set by the health department for the year 2000. The three Healthy Kansas 2000 objectives involve increasing the proportion of state residents who eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day to 35%; increase the proportion of adults to 40% whose dietary fat makes up less than 30% of their total food intake; and increase the proportion of adults who consume at least 600 milligrams of calcium daily to 70%. The survey found that only 12.5% of respondents ate five or more fruits and vegetables, and one-third got less than 30% of their total food intake from fat. About 48% of respondents ingested at least 600 milligrams of calcium a day. Other states may want to consider using similar survey methods to monitor the impact of nutritional programs.

Extended Childhood Intervention Prepares Children for School and Beyond
Article Abstract:
State programs modeled on Head Start can be effective in preventing juvenile delinquency in poor children. This was documented in 2001 by a 15-year follow-up study of the Chicago Child-Parent Centers Program, which led to lower rates of high school dropout, juvenile crime, and violent crime.
