Changing patterns of medical practice: protein restriction for chronic renal failure
Article Abstract:
Dietary protein restriction may decrease kidney damage in patients with chronic kidney failure. This type of treatment is based on the belief that a low-protein diet decreases the workload of the kidneys. It was first used in the late 1800s, and its popularity has fluctuated over the following century. Certain factors have limited the its usage to treat chronic kidney failure. These include the fear of malnutrition and a cultural belief in the benefits of dietary protein. Both physicians and patients have been unwilling to restrict their diet or lifestyle. Other factors support the use of dietary protein restriction. Several research studies have found that protein may cause kidney damage. The federal government is also trying to decrease the use of expensive treatments such as kidney dialysis. More emphasis is being placed upon the role of diet in the treatment of different diseases.

Increased serum lipoprotein(a) levels in patients with early renal failure
Article Abstract:
People with early kidney failure may have increased blood levels of lipoprotein(a), which could increase their risk of cardiovascular disease. Researchers measured blood levels of lipoprotein(a) in 257 healthy people and 160 people with early kidney failure. Lipoprotein(a) levels were higher in the people with early kidney failure compared to the healthy individuals. The worse their kidney function, the higher the lipoprotein(a) levels were. This indicates that the kidneys may not be able to excrete excess lipoprotein(a), which has been linked to heart disease.
