Across the great divide: the gulf between health care and social services has been identified as a major obstacle to community care
Article Abstract:
Riverside Mental Health Trust linked with Westminster Social Services to bid for contracts to operate services for those with long-term mental health problems. Following successful bids, social workers now have to deliver community support and rehabilitation services (CSRS). Research suggests that the concept of integration works although full findings will not be available until October 1996. The health and social care divide was seen as the major single obstacle to community care.

Social development
Article Abstract:
The General Social Services action group has published a consultation paper proposing the formation of a General Social Services Council, which would define and monitor issues such as the training and behaviour of social workers. The regulation of social services staff in the same way as that of nurses would protect the public, and it would also provide a forum for discussion of important issues. However, it may take some time before such a body is established.

Easing the social stress
Article Abstract:
People with continence problems can often feel isolated, as they are unwilling to leave their home for fear of being in an embarrassing situation. They are particularly affected by the poor provision of public toilets. Women with continence problems find it especially difficult to influence social policy, and this is why self-help groups such as Incon-tact play such a vital role.
