An assessment of the feasibility of health authorities generating unpaid mass media publicity in the long term
Article Abstract:
An anti-smoking project based in Oxfordshire, England, assessed the feasibility of obtaining sustained unpaid media coverage on smoking and health issues. Project workers sent press releases, mainly to the local media, whenever it was possible to generate a news story from routine work. They also wrote letters. The researchers carried out this activity for two years and found that it was possible to maintain media coverage over this period. Radio stations used half the press releases, newspapers published them all, and the project generated over 1031 column inches in the local press.

How important is the smoking status of the woman's partner as a predictor of smoking cessation in pregnancy? A literature review
Article Abstract:
Women whose partners smoke are less likely to give up smoking spontaneously when they become pregnant than those whose partners do not smoke, according to information obtained from a review of information contained in 62 papers on smoking and pregnancy. These women are also less likely to give up smoking after participating in a smoking-cessation programme and more likely to take up smoking again after their baby is born. It is clear that pregnancy should be regarded as an opportunity to encourage both women and their partners to give up smoking permanently.

Provision of smoking cessation help by primary care teams in Oxfordshire
Article Abstract:
More than 14 million people aged over 16 in the UK still smoke regularly, but more than 11 million people have given up smoking, and smoking cessation help is widely available from general practices. Of the 102 general practices in Oxfordshire, all gave individual advice through the GP or practice nurse, and 31% had a stop-smoking group. Primary care teams are now receiving more assistance in their smoking cessation work, and research is being undertaken into additional resources which could be made available to them.
