Acute-phase proteins and other systemic responses to inflammation
Article Abstract:
Acute-phase proteins are proteins whose synthesis is increased or decreased during inflammation, infections, trauma, burns, surgery and cancer. Some acute-phase proteins stimulate inflammation and others have anti-inflammatory actions. Acute-phase proteins include the complement system, the blood coagulation and thrombolytic system, antiproteases, transport proteins and other general proteins such as C-reactive protein and serum amyloid A. Most acute-phase proteins are regulated by immune system proteins such as the interleukins and interferons and tumor necrosis factor. Measuring blood levels of C-reactive protein and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate are the most common means of detecting an acute-phase reaction.

Familial pathways to suicidal behavior--Understanding and preventing suicide among adolescents
Article Abstract:
A stress-diathesis model for adults is presented that, along with the familial transmission of vulnerabilities to suicidal behavior, could help to explain and predict suicide among young people. Important stressors that may originate outside the family include the acute despair associated with relationship crises or other personal losses or failures and, in combination with such stressors, the inherited diathesis predisposes people to suicidal behavior.

Cytokine pathways and joint inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis
Article Abstract:
Rheumatoid arthritis is essentially caused by an imbalance between inflammatory immune substances and anti-inflammatory immune substances. Treatments are therefore focused on blocking the activity of the inflammatory substances and enhancing the activity of the anti-inflammatory substances.
