Countering the concerns: how to reinforce dental practice safety
Article Abstract:
Different methods have been developed to protect dental patients and staff from communicable diseases since the 1980s. An office safety communications program may alleviate patient concerns about becoming cross infected with different diseases. This type of program should involve communication between employees and between employees and patients regarding infection control methods. Most dentists and dental staff wear gloves while treating patients to reduce the risk of cross-infection. Widespread use of this practice has only occurred since the 1980s partially as a result of the AIDS epidemic. More dental office employees are being vaccinated against hepatitis B virus, another type of blood-borne pathogen. The use of sterilization and disinfection procedures has increased significantly in dental offices.
