Adenoviruses as gene-delivery vehicles
Article Abstract:
Research on human adenoviruses as vectors in gene-delivery vehicles is still in the preliminary stages. Vectors enclose a therapeutic gene and deliver it to the target cell. The many types of adenoviruses cause mild disease in the upper respiratory system and in the membrane of the eye. Adenoviruses have shown early promise because they produce recombinant virus in large numbers, transferring it into dividing and non-dividing cells. Applications of gene-delivery in cystic fibrosis have had limited appeal because the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene lasts only temporarily. Repeat procedures have failed to produce a long-term genetic correction. Other applications include cancer gene therapies that may deliver genes to tumor cells, activating specific antitumor responses.

Male delivery
Article Abstract:
Opinion is divided over the appointment of male midwives. Arguments against suggest male intervention inappropriate in childbirth. Men are unable to provide adequate support in a traditionally female role. However, arguments in favour emphasise the commitment of male midwives. Few women object to care from a male midwife as personality and sensitivity are more relevant than gender. However, women's opinions should have been sought before introducing male midwives.
