Depressed taste and smell in geriatric patients
Article Abstract:
Many aged patients will have diminished taste and smell. Most of the loss of taste is a result of a loss of smell. Aging causes a loss of salt and bitter taste but not sweet or sour. They should be encouraged to use seasonings rather than salt and sugar. Patients who smoke should be urged to quit since smoking makes food taste flat. Tongue brushing can enhance taste. Elderly patients should make sure they have an adequate diet.
