The role of cyclic nucleotides in the spontaneous contractility and responsiveness to nitric oxide of the rat uterus at midgestation and term
Article Abstract:
Cyclic nucleotides such as cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP appear to be involved in nitric oxide activation of uterine contraction. These compounds could be used to induce labor.

Adenylate cyclase and potassium channels are involved in forskolin- and 1,9-dideoxyforskolin-induced inhibition of pregnant rat uterus contractility
Article Abstract:
The drug forskolin activates potassium channels in uterine tissue, according to a study on rats. This drug is used to inhibit uterine contractions. A related drug, 1,9-dideoxyforskolin, also activates potassium channels, but to a lesser degree.

The effects of nitric oxide on the contractility of isolated uterine and aortic rings from pregnant rats
Article Abstract:
Nitric oxide appears to play a role in uterine contractions during labor. Nitric oxide is a chemical in the body that relaxes blood vessels. Researchers tested the effect of nitric oxide on tissue samples from the uterus and aorta taken from pregnant rats. Nitric oxide inhibited uterine contractions early in the pregnancy but not late in the pregnancy. This effect was blocked by oxyhemoglobin, which inhibits nitric oxide. Nitric oxide relaxed the aorta samples at all times during pregnancy. This effect was also blocked by oxyhemoglobin. The aorta samples were more sensitive to nitric oxide.
