Adult Functional Outcome of Those Born Small for Gestational Age: Twenty-six--Year Follow-up of the 1970 British Birth Cohort
Article Abstract:
Adults who were small-for-gestational age (SGA) at birth may have difficulty in school and in the workplace. Researchers followed 14,189 babies for up to 26 years, of whom 1,064 were SGA at birth. Compared to the normal birth weight (NBW) babies, SGA babies were less likely to be in the top 15th percentile of their high school class. They were also less likely to hold managerial or professional jobs and made less money. However, most were satisfied with their lives and had no serious social or emotional problems.
