Multimodal therapy for adenocarcinoma of the esophagus and esophagogastric junction
Article Abstract:
It is probably too early to recommend multimodal therapy for all patients with esophageal cancer. A 1996 study found that multimodal therapy, which includes chemotherapy, radiation treatment and surgery, resulted in higher survival rates compared to surgery alone. However, the patients had different types and stages of esophageal cancer. Eighty percent of patients with early cancer can survive with surgery alone. A disproportionate number of early-stage patients in one group or another could have skewed the results. Multimodal treatment can also be expensive and dangerous.

A comparison of multimodal therapy and surgery for esophageal adenocarcinoma
Article Abstract:
Combination therapy for esophageal cancer that includes chemotherapy, radiation treatment and surgery may improve survival rates compared to surgery alone. Researchers compared outcomes in 48 esophageal cancer patients who received chemotherapy, radiation treatment and surgery and 54 who received surgery alone. One-fourth of the patients receiving combined treatment responded and 32% were still alive three years later, compared to only 6% of those who received surgery alone.
