Adverse reactions
Article Abstract:
The anti-malarial drug Lariam (mefloquine) is apparently causing severe side effects such as paralysis and dizziness, but no prescription guidelines have yet been issued. Lariam should not be administered to people taking two-week holidays, according to some malaria experts. The Medicines Control Agency has received 932 reports of suspected adverse side effects since 1992, while legal action is being prepared by 450 people against the maker of Lariam, Hoffman la Roche. Descriptions are presented of patients who have allegedly suffered adverse reactions.

A 12-point code of conduct is now to be included in the contracts of support workers and nursing auxiliaries at St Richard's Hospital in Chichester, England. This follows an incident in which an auxiliary inappropriately accepted a gift from a patient. Managers report that the staff concerned have not objected to signing the code of conduct, which gives them a clear framework within which to work.
