Small-scale tragedies
Article Abstract:
Eighteen miniature sets were once used by the department of legal medicine at the Harvard Medical School to train forensic pathologists. Created by Chicago socialite Frances Glessner Lee in the 1940s, the sets are painstakingly precise recreations of crime scenes. In classes and seminars, students and experts were once required to use minute details from these sets to correctly re-enact crimes. Today the models have only artistic value. But up until the 1960s they were an invaluable substitute for video, which had not yet been invented.

Under pressure: a rash of suicides and sudden deaths among New York City EMS workers is raising fears of rescue-worker burnout
Article Abstract:
At least three New York City emergency medical service workers have killed themselves since Jan 1992, more than six times the rate of the general population. The constant exposure to violence and surprise, the unusual hours and radical shifts in adrenaline for these workers create a high level of stress that can lead to depression and suicide. In an effort to help the workers, New York City offers some work-related counseling and may institute a psychological screening program for prospective employees.
