Age-based rationing and women
Article Abstract:
Age-based distribution of publicly funded health care will discriminate more against elderly women than men. Under an age-based distribution plan, the elderly will receive less funding for health care than the young. Women live an average of seven and a half years longer than men, and among people over the age of 65, there are only 68 men for every 100 women. Age-based distribution of health care is based on the length of the average male life rather than the female life span. Elderly women are less likely than men to have private health insurance, and have fewer financial resources. Elderly women made up 71% of the population receiving both Medicare and Medicaid in 1986. Elderly women may have fewer financial and emotional resources, because three out of five women over 65 years old are single, while three out of four men in this age group are married. Elderly women are more likely to have chronic conditions that require long-term health care.

Chinese draw their power from Tibet's sacred lake
Article Abstract:
The Chinese 'People's Armed Police' are boring four tunnels nearly four miles long through the Gambala mountains to the river where a pump-storage hydro-electricstation, costing 80.5 million pounds sterling, is being built. The Tibetans believe the Yamdrok Tso is a sacred lake. This project could be a major ecological disaster in the 21st century as the 200 square miles of lake, which is 22,000 ft high, could drain away in 50 years. Tibetans expect to see little benefit as the electricity generated will power mines and industry between Lhasa and Shigatse.
