Seabather's eruption
Article Abstract:
Cases of dermatitis associated with swimming in the sea off Long Island, NY, appear to be caused by larvae of a sea anemone known as Edwardsiella lineata. Dermatitis is a general term used to refer to skin irritations. In 1975 and again in 1980 and 1990, a significant number of cases of dermatitis occurring on parts of the body covered by bathing suits were reported in New York. The initial symptom was a stinging sensation on leaving the water. This worsened if the swimmer rinsed with fresh water, exercised or continued wearing the contaminated bathing suit. Other symptoms included development of a rash within a few minutes to a few hours after leaving the ocean. Large numbers of 2-to-3 millimeter long pink larvae were found in the ocean at the time of the outbreaks. When healthy volunteers were exposed to the larvae, they developed the same rash as the swimmers. The larvae's stinging mechanisms were triggered by chemical or physical changes in their environment. The larvae metamorphosed into the sea anemone.

How to automate property management operations
Article Abstract:
Selecting the correct automation system for real estate and property management involves several issues. Automation allows companies to grow without increasing their overhead and to respond quickly to market changes. The strategies for implementing automation include: developing software in house; purchasing commercial software; or establishing automation partnerships with companies that have expertise in computers and property management. A technology partnership is preferable to self-computerization and commercial software because property management firms can depend on their automation partners to maintain and upgrade software, and to provide technical support and training, when necessary.
