Air pollution and health effects: a study of medical visits among children in Santiago, Chile
Article Abstract:
Air pollution and weather health effects in children have been studied through use of time-series analyses of 2 years of daily visits to primary health care clinics in Santiago, Chile. Counts for upper or lower respiratory symptoms for cohorts 3-15 years of age and below age 2 were computed. Under age 2 a 50-microgram/cu m change in particulate matter below 10 micrometers in diameter (PM(sub.10)) was associated with a 4-12% increase in lower respiratory symptoms. For children 3-15 years of age, the increase in lower respiratory symptoms was 3-9% for a 50-microgram/cu m change in PM (sub.10) and 5% per 50 ppb ozone change.

Inhalation of diesel engine exhaust affects spermatogenesis in growing male rats
Article Abstract:
The gaseous phase of diesel engines appears to disrupt the endocrine system of male rats and inhibits their ability to produce sperm. Other effects of diesel exhaust include stimulated hormonal secretion of the adrenal cortex and depression of gonadotropin-releasing hormone.
