Airway smooth muscle in asthma - not just more of the same
Article Abstract:
In culture, serum or bronchoalveolar-lavage fluid patients with asthma causes greater proliferation of human airway smooth-muscle cell than does serum or lavage fluid from normal subjects. It is conceivable that the same intrinsic difference between asthmatic and normal smooth muscle accounts for both the increases in proliferation and the altered contractility.

Evidence of a role of tumor necrosis factor alpha in refractory asthma
Article Abstract:
The markers of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) activity on peripheral-blood monocytes in 10 patients with refractory asthma, 10 patients with mid-to moderate asthma, and 10 control subjects are measured. It is concluded that patients with refractory asthma have evidence of up-regulation of the TNF-alpha axis.

Chitin checking-novel insights into asthma
Article Abstract:
A study conducted by experts provides insight into the pathogenesis of allergic asthma that could fuel the development of new therapies. Chitin, a carbohydrate polymer, is found in allergic airway responses and it is observed that the enzyme is critical to disease expression in an experimental model of asthma.
