Alcohol consumption and mortality among middle-aged and elderly U.S. adults
Article Abstract:
Moderate alcohol consumption may lower the risk of death in the middle-aged and elderly population. Researchers analyzed 46,000 deaths among 490,000 men and women surveyed. Participants, mostly white and middle-class, filled out lifestyle questionnaires in 1982 and were resurveyed in 1991. Deaths from cardiovascular disease were 30-40% lower in moderate drinkers compared to nondrinkers. Deaths from breast cancer, however, were 30% higher in women who had at least one drink daily. The lowest overall death rates were found in men and women who drank about one drink each day.

Smoking vs Other Risk Factors as the Cause of Smoking-Attributable Deaths: Confounding in the Courtroom
Article Abstract:
Smoking is a substantial cause of death that is independent of other risk factors for death. In a study of 974,150 US adults, adjusting for other risk factors only decreased the overall estimate of deaths caused by smoking about 1%, from 401,109 to 396,741 deaths per year.
