Alcohol metabolism in Asian-American men with genetic polymorphisms of aldehyde dehydrogenase
Article Abstract:
Increased blood levels of acetaldehyde may be responsible for the differences seen in some Asian men in response to alcohol ingestion. Mutations in the aldehyde dehydrogenase (ADH2) gene may influence these levels. Genetic testing was performed on 31 Asian men and alcohol and acetaldehyde blood levels were compared after consuming either weak or strong alcoholic drinks. Men carrying the mutated ADH2 gene had higher blood levels of acetaldehyde compared to men without the mutated gene after consuming similar drinks. Blood alcohol levels were similar for groups consuming similar drinks.

Influence of the Vitamin D Receptor Gene Polymorphism on Bone Loss in Men after Liver Transplantation
Article Abstract:
Patients with a specific gene polymorphism are less likely to lose bone mass than others after they receive a liver transplant. Gene polymorphisms are differences in the genetic sequence of the gene that may affect the function of the gene but are not as serious as a gene mutation. In a study of 55 men who received a liver transplant, those with the bb polymorphism in the gene for the vitamin D receptor lost less bone than those with the BB or Bb polymorphism.

Gene forms and meningococcal disease
Article Abstract:
A particular variation of the gene for interleukin-1 may increase a person's chance of surviving a meningococcal infection, according to a study of 1,106 patients with meningococcal infection and 839 healthy blood donors. Meningococcal infection is a bacterial infection that can be very serious. The gene variation in question is called IL1B(-511).
