Alcoholic parotid sialadenosis
Article Abstract:
Dentists are in the best position to detect enlarged parotid glands resulting from alcoholism. The parotid glands are located in the cheeks. Other diseases can cause enlarged parotid glands, or sialadenosis, including bulimia, mumps, Sjogren's syndrome, sarcoidosis, HIV infection and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. However, alcoholic sialadenosis will almost always be accompanied by liver disease. This was the case for a 49-year-old man, whose sialadenosis was referred to a dentist. He admitted drinking hard liquor daily and had biochemical signs of liver dysfunction.
