Aldosterone blockade and heart failure
Article Abstract:
Drugs that block the activity of the hormone aldosterone may be beneficial for some patients with heart failure. Spironolactone is the most common drug of this kind, but a similar drug called eplerenone may have fewer side effects. A study of this drug published in 2003 found that it decreased the death rate by 15% and also lowered the rate of hospitalization for exacerbations of the disease.

Mechanical cardiac-support devices -- dreams and devilish details
Article Abstract:
Ventricular assist devices can improve the health of patients in heart failure and even extend their life. These devices are surgically implanted in the chest and help the heart contract more strongly. However, they are expensive and may not extend life beyond a year or two.
