Crossing 'line on the map' in search of hope
Article Abstract:
Finding realistic solutions to immigration problems is preferable to engaging in mass panic. Many Americans are worried that immigrants are increasing welfare and health care costs, besides contributing to violence in cities. It is difficult to patrol the border because of the huge numbers of people moving back and forth, many working in the U.S. but living in Mexico. The government must first understand the health care problems of the border area's population before they can be solved. By year 2000, El Paso, Texas and its Mexican neighbor city Juarez will have about 2.3 million people using the same water, breathing the same air, and sharing similar health problems. Thousands of Mexican immigrants come to the U.S. looking for a better life. A long-term solution would be that they no longer have to cross the border to find it.

Democrats drop universal coverage
Article Abstract:
The Democratic Party Platform does not contain a commitment for universal health care coverage for the first time in 50 years. Instead, the democrats favor laws that allow Americans to retain their insurance even if they change jobs. Congress has already passed such a law and Pres Clinton wants to extend health insurance benefits up to six months after Americans become unemployed. The 1996 law ending 60 years of welfare entitlements may add to the 40 million Americans who have no health insurance. The US and South Africa are the only countries that do not have universal health coverage.
