Alternative Medicine Meets Science
Article Abstract:
All medical therapies, regardless of their origin, should be subjected to similar standards of proven effectiveness, clear therapeutic uses, and demonstrated safety. Whether a treatment originates in a research lab, or from a centuries-old alternative medical tradition, it should be proven effective beyond the placebo effect before it enters widespread use or receives payment by insurers. Herbal and other alternative medical practices are popular, but most have either failed scientific testing, or never been subjected to it. Significant health care dollars are being spent on products and procedures that may not work. Those that pass the test, however, ought to be put into practice.

Prepublication Release of Medical Research
Article Abstract:
The best way to notify doctors and patients of new research is to publish the research in a medical journal. Some researchers release information before it is published in a journal, usually at a scientific meeting, a press conference, or in a press release. The National Library of Medicine also issues Clinical Alerts to notify physicians and the public about research that could have a substantial impact on public health.
