Screening and Intervention for Intimate Partner Abuse Practices and Attitudes of Primary Care Physicians
Article Abstract:
Primary care physicians are unlikely to screen patients for possible domestic abuse unless the patient is injured. Researchers screened 400 family practitioners, internists, and gynecologists to determine their usual screening practices. Almost 80% routinely inquired about abuse by intimate partners when the patient was injured, but only 9-11% screened new patients for domestic abuse. Only 1% of doctors working in health maintenance organizations screened new patients for abuse, but 37% of doctors in public clinics evaluated new patients for domestic abuse.
