An eight-month-old boy with diarrhea and failure to thrive
Article Abstract:
An eight month old boy came to the hospital with chronic diarrhea, protuberant stomach and inadequate weight gain. He was alert, of normal intelligence, had normal speech skills and neurologic examination. Laboratory tests were normal except for blood smear. He was given protein hydrolysate, rice cereal and bananas and continued to vomit although he had no fever. The patient was diagnosed as having abetalipoproteinemia, a rare, recessively inherited defect in the formation of the protein that helps in fat metabolism. The child was put on an elemental fat free diet and started to gain weight and grow normally. Patients with this problem must be watched for vitamin E and other fat soluble vitamin deficiencies as well as protein-calorie malnutrition.

A 68-year-old man with a rash, diabetes insipidus, and laryngeal stenosis
Article Abstract:
A 68-year-old man was admitted to a hospital because of a blockage in his larynx that caused breathing difficulty. He had been diagnosed with diabetes insipidus six years before and had begun developing a chronic rash at that time. The rash consisted of small yellow lesions that were characteristic of a disease called xanthoma disseminatum. During surgical reconstruction of his larynx, tissue samples were taken. Microscopic analysis of the samples confirmed the diagnosis, which had affected not only his larynx and skin, but also his pituitary gland.
