An evaluation of the 1996 No Smoking Day in Wales
Article Abstract:
The effectiveness of No Smoking Day in Wales, United Kingdom, was assessed by interviewing 829 adult smokers before the day and as many as possible one week after, then again three months after. The follow-up interviews were either via the telephone or at home and 479 were able to be followed up. Awareness of the No Smoking day was high, with 90% of smokers knowing it was happening, but only 3.6% were not smoking three months later, and 0.6% actually gave up on the day. A large number restarted smoking. However, it is possible that the event encouraged people who were thinking of giving up.

The European Network of Health Promoting Schools: development and evaluation in Wales
Article Abstract:
The participation of Welsh schools in the European Network of Health Promoting Schools, which began in 1993, has been based on repeatability, with schools receiving limited funding for a two-year period, practicability, the ability to monitor long term and limited disruption to normal school activities. Different approaches have been used for primary and secondary schools, but all have recognised the need to share ideas and good practice. Future school health promotion projects in Wales may include extending the scheme to include three or four special schools.

Life Education Centres: an evaluation of a mobile health education resource in Wales for children
Article Abstract:
The UK's Life Education Centres (LECs) now reach around 250,000 children. They are mainly mobile classrooms which offer advanced equipment and are run by trained educators. Recent research has focused on the impact of the LECs' 'Decisions' programme on pupil knowledge, beliefs and behaviour, using information from 339 pupils aged 10 and 11. It was found that the LECs are achieving some of their educational objectives, but that pupils still fail to choose a healthy course action when there is pressure from their contemporaries not to do so.
