An incremental dosing protocol for women with severe vaginal trichomoniasis and adverse reactions to metronidazole
Article Abstract:
Women with allergic reactions to metronidazole may be treated for Trichomonas vaginitis with an intravenous incremental dosing therapy of metronidazole. Researchers tried the intravenous metronidazole regimen with two women with T. vaginitis who had allergic reactions to metronidazole when it was applied to the skin. Alternative therapies such as medicated douches had also failed. Both patients were successfully treated with the intravenous metronidazole. Metronidazole taken orally is the most effective therapy for T. vaginitis. Allergic reactions may be a problem with oral metronidazole in particular because it has a long half-life. Patients undergoing intravenous metronidazole therapy because of suspected allergic sensitivity should be monitored closely and emergency drugs and equipment for allergic crises should be close at hand.

Infant mortality, low birth weight, and prematurity among Hispanic, white, and African American women in North Carolina
Article Abstract:
Hispanic women in North Carolina have the lowest infant mortality rate, according to a study of 498,902 births between 1993 and 1997. They also had lower rates of premature birth and low birth weight than African American women. This is surprising, since Hispanic women are less likely than white women to get appropriate prenatal care.

A randomized trial of intravaginal nonoxynol 9 versus oral metronidazole in the treatment of vaginal trichomoniasis
Article Abstract:
Vaginal nonoxynol 9 suppositories are not effective in treating vaginal Trichomonas infections. In a study of 46 women who were randomly assigned to a single dose of metronidazole or nonoxynol 9 suppository, all who received metronidazole were cured compared to 18% of those who received the suppository.
