An outbreak of mud-wrestling-induced pustular dermatitis in college students: dermatitis palaestrae limosae
Article Abstract:
Individuals who engage in mud wrestling could be placing themselves at risk of developing a type of dermatitis caused by gram-negative bacteria in the mud. Seven students reported to a university health center with a rash approximately 36 hours after participating in mud wrestling. The rash was characterized by lesions around hair follicles similar to that which occurs in individuals with severe acne, and covered their trunk and extremities. Cultures of the skin lesions grew the bacteria Enterobacter and Citrobacter. Cultures of soil samples used in the event also grew Enterobacter. A survey of 74 students living in the same residences revealed that 17 other students had experienced a similar rash after mud wrestling. Of the 24 total cases, 21 had participated in mud wrestling. Of the 50 students who did not report such a rash, only five had done so. The bacteria may enter the skin through cuts or abrasions incurred during the sport.
