Anesthesiology, part 2
Article Abstract:
Local anesthetics are the most commonly used anesthetics and can be injected in a region of the body undergoing an operation. Lidocaine, mepivacaine, and bupivacaine are most commonly used, however, they can affect the heart and the central nervous system. Pain control in surgical patients usually involves a combination of drugs including opioids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and local anesthetics. Drug administration can be controlled by the patient using a small computerized pump. Pulse oximetry and capnography are used during surgery to monitor the patient's blood gases.

Anesthesiology. part 1
Article Abstract:
An overview of recent advances in the field of anesthesiology is presented. Complications associated with traditional anesthetic drugs have prompted anesthesiologists to use new drugs during surgery that are associated with fewer side effects. All patients, particularly those with a history of heart disease, should be carefully evaluated by the anesthesiologist before contemplating elective surgery. Thorough pre-operative evaluations can substantially reduce testing and procedural costs. Surgery type will dictate the type of blood products needed before surgery.

Transmission of hepatitis C virus from a patient toan anesthesiology assistant to five patients
Article Abstract:
Doctors describe an outbreak of hepatitis C among surgical patients at a hospital. It began when a patient who contracted hepatitis C from a blood transfusion several years before surgery. An anesthesiologist present during the surgery contracted the infection from her and transmitted it to five other patients who had no other risk factors for hepatitis C.
