Anaphylactic shock after insect-sting challenge in 138 persons with a previous insect-sting reaction
Article Abstract:
Only 28% of patients who had previously had an anaphylactic reaction to an insect sting had a reaction after being stung a second time. Anaphylactic reactions to insect venom occur when hypersensitive individuals are stung, and these reactions can range from mild skin symptoms to life-threatening respiratory distress. Of 138 patients with a prior history of anaphylaxis to a bee sting who were intentionally stung again, 39 (28%) developed anaphylactic symptoms. Of these 39, 17 went into anaphylactic shock. Levels of cardiovascular regulators - epinephrine, norepinephrine, dopamine and angiotensin I and II - were compared in the 138 patients and eight volunteers before and after being stung. In the volunteers and patients with no or mild reactions, there was no change in the levels of these cardiovascular regulators. In the 17 patients who went into anaphylactic shock, there was a direct correlation between the drop in blood pressure and the increase in levels of norepinephrine, epinephrine and angiotensin II.

Aortic coarctation diagnosed after hypertension in pregnancy
Article Abstract:
Women with hypertension in pregnancy should be screened for coarctation of the aorta. Coarctation of the aorta occurs when part of the aorta, which is the large blood vessel leading from the heart, becomes constricted. Three cases are reported of women with a history of hypertension during pregnancy who were found to have coarctation of the aorta. The women were treated with surgery or balloon dilatation and two experienced a return to normal blood pressure. Coarctation of the aorta is normally diagnosed in childhood.
